Exquisite!

Ghost Town - Rachel Caine

“Myrnin, who hadn't said much, suddenly reached out and wrapped his arms around her.
She stiffened, shocked, and for a panicked second wondered whether he'd suddenly decided to snack on her neck... but it was just a hug.
His body felt cold against hers, and way too close, but then he let go and stepped back. "You've done very well. I'm extremely proud of you," he said. There was a touch of color high in his pale cheeks. "Do go home now. And shower. You reek like the dead."
Which, coming from a vampire, was pretty rich.”

Plot.

Woah. Suspense, mystery, action intertwined with romance, loss and heartbreak.

The housemates are dealing with the same issues. Eve and Michael / Claire and Shane relationship. Claire's relationship with Myrnin (which is pretty hard to define) and Claire's relationship with the town vampires. Eve works at the university coffee shop and Shane is still slicing meat for money ;). Michael has his own dealings with the vampires whereas Claire goes to college and works in Myrnin's lab.

The main Morganville issue - fixing the crazy-super-Myrnin-Ada-computer so the vampires can once again have control over the town borders as well as the control over people's memories once they leave. Also, the portals aren't working as they should so Claire's main focus is on that.

It seemed like it was all peaceful for once but, hey, this is Morganville we're talking about. There was a party and dead bodies on both vampire and human sides. The result, Claire facing serious charges and the punishment is no sleep or rest until the computer is fixed. Which resulted in a forty-nine-hour stretch of standing up and fixing the damn thing without putting someone's brain in it. But she did it. It seemed like it was all fixed.

But it wasn't. The computer was tuned in with Myrnin's brain and guess what? He isn't the best choice in the matter. Vampires and humans alike all over Morganville have started to forget who they were and returned three years into their past. It spread like a plague. Even Michael, Eve and Shane have eventually succumbed to it. Which left poor Claire feeling all alone while almost no one recognized her. Not to mention her life was in danger since the vampires forgot who she was. As did Myrnin. He also returned to the past when he was completely crazy but still had Ada.

And that is the main reason for the memory loss. Myrnin couldn't deal with losing Ada. Not even he knew how much it really affected him.

With crazy Myrnin guarding the computer, Amelie's fight over the town and strangers going berserk all around, will Claire succeed in restoring peace once again?

Review.

Myrnin *.*

He's awesome. Yes, I said it. I know he is responsible for the memory loss. But he did it with the right motive. I don't care. He is my favorite character. Judge all you want.

“I love arguing with you, Claire. You always surprise me. And occasionally, you even make sense.”

“Is this your bedroom?" she asked, and turned to look at him. Myrnin straightened and jammed the big red floppy hat back on his head. The feathers waved back and forth.
"Don't get any ideas," he said. "I'm far too young and innocent for that kind of thinking.”

Myrnin and Claire have a weird relationship, I'll give you that. She obviously loves Shane but she also cares for Myrnin. While Myrnin obviously loved Ada but he cares for Claire more than he should. And there are some hints of that throughout the Series.

“He's not doing anything he shouldn't be doing, right?"
"Like what?"
"Like hitting on you."
"Ew. No, of course not. He doesn't see me that way."
Michael shook his head and went back to his coffee.
"What? You think he does?"
"Sometimes he looks at you a little... oddly, that's all. Maybe you're right. Maybe he just wants you for your blood."
"Again, Ew! What's with you this morning?"
"Not enough coffee.”

“Myrnin came in from the back room, carrying a load of books, which he dropped with a loud bang on the floor to glare at the two of them. "Excuse me," he said, "but when did my lab become appropriate for snogging?"
"What's snogging?" Shane asked.
"Ridiculous displays of inappropriate affection in front of me. Roughly translated.”

When you add that up along with him actually not hurting pretty much defenseless human Claire during his crazy periods, I think it's safe to say that something's up. It isn't that I don't like Shane. It's just that I like Myrnin more. And him acting in love and possessive... I'd die to see.

Claire is the savior of crazytown again. It's amazing that they even managed to exist before her. I don't mind her doing it since she is the heroine and all but I think she does a bit too much. What if for once, just once, Eve would be the one to save the day instead of crying in Michael's arms? Just once I would like a change of pace. Because this is getting tiresome. It's just that I started the Series and it blew my mind how I couldn't see the next step coming. The author was great with the unexpected twist but... now, I know what will happen. Claire, no matter how unbelievable and impossible it seems, will save the day.

It isn't a remark so I didn't put it under that. It's just that it doesn't do the trick for me anymore. I agree that the story was great. A lot of action, riots, vampires going berserk... but it all came to the same conclusion. Claire, the seventeen year old savior. Even though Amelie, Oliver etc have been around for centuries. And now they are repeatedly saved by an underage girl. I just need - more /sth different.

But let's not go to the dark side completely just yet.

There is still a whole lot of hot guys / vampires, serious suspense, awesome humor with a hint of irony and dash of sarcasm to keep you happy and laughing for days.

1. Claire got some balls in the process standing up to Monica like this...

“Don't diss me, Danvers. I'm warning you."
"I'm not dissing you," Claire sighed. "I'm ignoring you. There's a difference. Dissing you implies I think you're actually important”

2. Oliver still a good/bad guy with some wicked humor.

“Are you armed?" Oliver asked her.
She glanced down at her backpack and instantly, instinctively held back. "No."
"Lie to me again and I'll put you out on the street and do this myself."
Claire swallowed. "Uh, yeah."
"With what?"
"Silver-coated stakes, wooden stakes, a crossbow, about ten bolts . . . oh, and a squirt gun with some silver-nitrate solution."
He smiled grimly at the dark windshield. "What, no grenade launchers?"
"Would they work?"
"I choose not to comment.”

3. Myrnin is sweet?! Told you ;)

“Here," Myrnin said, his voice still gentle and low. "Amelie said you had to work. No one said you had to work alone." He picked up the next part and slotted it in, took the screwdriver from Claire's numbed fingers, and fastened it with a couple of deft, fast movements. "I'll be your hands."
She wanted to cry, because it was so sweet, but it wouldn't do any good.”

“Oh, Claire," he said. "You think me a far better man than I am. That's kind, and flattering."
"Are you saying that you -"
"Doughnuts!" Myrnin interrupted her and darted away, to zip back in seconds with an open box.”

4. I honestly think the author was paid good money for promoting Coke in this Series. That is all everyone ever drinks.

“Even in an apocalypse like this, surely running out of Coke qualified as a disaster.”

5. Myrnin a tiny bit possessive? Mmmmm....

“Myrnin said softly. "And how is it that you do not understand that HERE, in THIS place, this girl belongs to me, not to you?”

6. Eve finally commending Shane on his humor XD

“Bite me, Goth princess,” Shane called from the back. “Not literally or anything.”
“Maybe you should say that to Michael.”
“Not funny, Eve,” Michael said.
Eve raised her eyebrows and held her fingers up, measuring off about an inch. “Little bit,” she said.”

7. Shane being a little bit jealous...

“How'd you get to be so good at this?"
"I had a good teacher."
"Better not have been Myrnin or I'll have to kick his predatory ass."
"I mean you, dummy."
"Oh.”

8. Michael and Shane and their passive aggressive relationship :)

“Hey, Mikey? You get her hurt and I'll end you."
"You let anything happen to Eve and I'll do the same," Michael said. He'd just finished kissing Eve, too. "While you're at it, don't get yourself killed, either, bro."
"Ditto. And don't kiss me.”

9. Amelie and Oliver... sounds completely wrong but also strangely right

Amelie said, “I won’t be your servant in Morganville. Nor should you be mine. Equals.” She offered her hand to him, and he looked down at it, clearly taken aback. But he took it. “Now defend what is ours, my partner.”
He grinned … grinned! … and whirled to meet Myrnin in midleap as Myrnin attacked.”

10. That just made me want him more...

“Myrnin was—for a vampire who looked about twice her age, but was thousands of years older than that—pretty hot. He could be sweet and affectionate one minute, cold and predatory the next, and that kept her from having any kind of crush on him, mostly. Truth was that he’d make a terrible, possibly fatal boyfriend.”

Conclusion.

Great series. It has a little bit of everything for everyone. If it weren't for young adult but adult it would definitely compete with the Black Dagger Brotherhood. But it isn't. There should be much more sex, violence and worse villains for that to happen.

Like this, this Series is the best young adult series I've read so far. More violence than the rest, it actually has something more than kissing and a lot of situations require some thinking on my part before moving on to the next scene.

I'm looking forward to the next book :)
