Short story of the Morganville Vampires Series about Shane's upcoming birthday party

Let Them Eat Cake - Rachel Caine

"Let Them Eat Cake" is a short story of the Morganville Vampires Series that is placed between "Last Breath" and "Black Dawn". It is a mostly humorous tale about Shane's upcoming birthday party.

You know there has to be a lot of humour involved when Claire and Eve get to baking. In the kitchen. Alone. Well, why the hell not? They survived so much so far that this certainly won't be the end of them. It might be the end of the cake, though.

Claire is set on making everything ready on time. We have the chocolate cake with a vanilla icing, Oreo "dirt" on top of that and for the grand finale there is a gorilla and a few toy soldiers fighting it out.

Everything is ready as it will ever be, except that the birthday boy isn't home on time. When he still doesn't arrive after the dark, they all agree to go look for him. Claire imagines all the horrible things that could have happened to him in a town full of vampires...

They finally find him in Common Grounds, having a little birthday party on his own. He is seated in front of a pink cupcake with a candle in it. And on the other side of the table there is - none other than Myrnin. Apparently, they have some kind of a stand off since their faces show a lot of pent up rage. The ones orchestrating the event are Oliver and Amelie. Not for the fun of it either, judging by their cold smiles. They have been at it for a while and it seems no one is ready to give up any time soon.

This short story is a lot of fun but beneath the light birthday atmosphere we can feel a turmoil. Shane's hatred toward Myrnin and vice versa. Oliver and Amelie who are obviously not satisfied with how things have gone so they are playing their own wicked game of cats and mice.

This is only a warm-up for the great event, called "Black Dawn". Don't miss it.
